Portrayal

Unknown

Thomas McCawley (1876 - April 15, 1912) was the Titanic's gym instructor.

When Thomas Andrews toured the ship to a group of passengers, McCawley presented different machines and offered Ruth DeWitt Bukater to try the rowing machine, but she refused.

During the sinking, McCawley remained in the gym and told a passenger that he would not wear a life jacket, as it might interfere with his swimming. John Jacob Astor had warned him that the water would actually damage his stroke, since the ship was 1130 kilometers from the coast. This indeed, cost him his life, being mercilessly sucked by a vortex of hundreds of tons of water created by the fall of the first stack.

Behind the scenesEdit

  • McCawley was portrayed by an unknown actor in James Cameron's Titanic, but his scenes were cut from the theatrical version and was uncredited. However, he can still be seen in the film's deleted scenes.
  • In history, Thomas McCawley does not survive the sinking, so it can be assumed that the character perished.
